Makerere is a research-lead university with a rich history in biomedical research, ranking 4th in Africa. In 2008 the university implemented a 10-year Strategic Plan with a vision to be a leading institution. The College of Health Sciences (CHS) is an integral school within Makerere University. It is located within the complex of the Mulago National Teaching Referral Hospital in Kampala on Mulago Hill. It is the largest hospital in Uganda and is home to the only MDR-TB treatment center in the country. The hospital has been a key collaborative site with the Tuberculosis Research Unit (TBRU) for the past 30 years.
Moses Joloba

Dr. Joloba is a physician researcher with expertise in infectious diseases, diagnostics, and program implementation using both conventional microbiology and modern molecular approaches. He has a leading role in the strengthening of laboratory services for Uganda and beyond. He has helped establish several laboratories including a laboratory for the Tuberculosis Research Unit (TBRU) and became its technical director and later a scientific director. A number of laboratory-based studies were conducted and published, where many of which Dr. Joloba was the first author. These published studies involved research on early bactericidal activity and quantitative bacillary response to therapy and evaluation of new markers to therapy. He is the Chair of the World Bank funded East African Public Health Laboratory-networking group that aims to establish in East Africa, high quality, accessible public health laboratories for the diagnosis and surveillance of TB and other communicable diseases. Along with this, Dr. Joloba has successfully competed for extramural research support (obtained 10 grants so far) and published over 230 peer-reviewed research articles. Of direct relevance to this grant, he has successfully trained 75 Master’s, 25 PhD and 8 Postdoctoral students to completion and several non-degree students from the region and internationally.
