Dr. Whalen is a physician-epidemiologist and distinguished Karen and Jim Holbrook Professor of Global Health, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Head of the Global Health Institute at the University of Georgia. Dr. Whalen’s 30 years of research experience has centered on improving tuberculosis control and clinical care for TB and HIV-infected persons, and building capacity for research, teaching and clinical care in Africa. Dr. Whalen has been working in Uganda for 30 years, collaborating with his Ugandan colleagues to develop immunology and microbiology laboratories, data coordinating centers, as well as field research capacity. As Director of the Clinical Core, Dr. Whalen will bring extensive experience in clinical and epidemiologic studies of TB infection and disease in domestic and international settings, as well as statistical analysis of epidemiological data, bioinformatics, infrastructure and capacity building, and household contact investigations and population-based cohort studies.
