TB Research Unit
The TBRU consortium includes a partnership with the following sites:
- Makerere University School of Medicine, Kampala, Uganda
- Núcleo de Doenças Infecciosas, Vitória, Brazil
In conjunction with Rutgers University, both sites have executed clinical trials, conducted clinical and translational research on pulmonary tuberculosis, and worked on multiple projects (CDRC 2009-2016; TBRU 1993-1999; TBRU 2014-2021; FEND-TB 2021-2026). The efforts between Rutgers University and these institutions have included work in biomarker discovery, Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain research, clinical trials of immunoadjuvants, and trials of new diagnostics for tuberculosis.
Uganda and Brazil have endemic high rates of pulmonary tuberculosis. Both sites have investigators (Dr. Moses Joloba, Dean of the Makerere School of Medicine; Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues and Moises Palaci, Directors of the Nucleo Infectious Diseases at UFES) with a long history in TB research and expertise in immunology and microbiology. Both sites have highly proficient, skilled, well-resourced, and internationally recognized laboratories in microbiology and immunology.
